Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Carboglass)

Sheffield Hallam University

Faculty of Arts, Computing, Engineering and Sciences (ACES)

Materials Engineering Research Institute (MERI)

Fixed-term for 24 months

This exciting EPSRC-funded project, "Carboglass", seeks to establish the technological potential, through a proof - of - concept study, of an entirely new family of glass materials which could safely and stably incorporate high levels of CO2 by locking it away within the structure of the glass. This will present multiple new properties and enable transformative industrial changes in the way we manufacture, use, recycle and think about glass.

An experienced and skilled postdoctoral researcher, you will carry out lab-based analysis to investigate glass composition / structure / property relations in model systems. This will involve work in laboratories in both Sheffield and Bristol, and you will undertake regular travel between these sites. As well as a relevant degree and a PhD in materials science or geology, you will have hands-on experience of laboratory-scale preparation and analysis of glasses, magmas or melts using spectroscopic techniques such as Raman, FT-IR, UV-Vis-IR, SEM/EDX, XRD and XRF. Experience of synchrotron-based X-ray or neutron techniques is desirable and the ability to work effectively, both independently and in teams, is essential.

For non-EU applicants, we may be able to offer a certificate of sponsorship for this job if required.
