The UCL Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment is the UK’s largest and leading multidisciplinary Faculty of the Built Environment; covering Architecture, Construction and Project Management, Planning and Environmental Design and other specialist fields. Part of this Faculty, the Bartlett School of Architecture is itself home to researchers working in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and engineering. The Survey of London explores the architecture and history of London area by area, drawing on a wide range of documentary sources and a detailed investigation of streets and buildings. Since 2013, the Survey of London has been attached to the Bartlett School of Architecture. Staff contribute to teaching and otherwise play their part in the aims, research and life of the School. The Survey of London is seeking to appoint a part-time Research Associate to contribute to the production of the Survey of London series of volumes, through research, writing and editing. The post holder may also teach on the Bartlett’s MA Architecture and Historic Urban Environments course.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in History, Architectural History, Art History or another relevant discipline, coupled with substantial knowledge of British architecture with a specialism in one or more areas. In addition, they will have substantial experience of primary documentary research in the field of London’s buildings, development and architecture together with experience of investigating the fabric of buildings, and of writing for publication. A highly motivated individual who has the ability to engage with other London historians, academics and architects in order to work in a strategic and interdisciplinary way, will succeed in this role. The ability to plan and progress agreed work programmes with minimum work supervision, is key. This post is available starting from 01 March 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £34,635 - £41,864 per annum , inclusive of London Allowance.
