The post

The College wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to participate in the project “Dynamics and dissipation of shocks in the partially ionised chromosphere”. This STFC funded post is available from 1st of April 2018 with the possibility to delay start until 1st October 2018 for a period of 3 years. The successful applicant will focus on investigating how the partially ionised plasma of the solar chromosphere changes the structure of, and with it the dissipation in, MHD shocks. This will require the successful applicant to set-up, run and analyse numerical simulations performed using the (PIP) code, and develop comparisons between the simulation results and solar observations.

The post will include developing and performing multi-fluid simulations of shocks in the solar chromosphere, understanding their observational signatures and comparing the results with solar observations. The research fellow will work closely with Dr. Andrew Hillier and Dr. Claire Foullon.

About you

The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study. The successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in solar MHD and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required.
