Research Associate

University of Bristol - School of Physiology, Pharmacology & Neuroscience

We are looking for a highly motivated Research Associate to join our group to investigate the neuronal and synaptic mechanisms underpinning how the brain adapts to the ever-changing environment.

In this project, we are particularly interested in how neuromodulators influence dendritic spikes and synaptic plasticity to control adaptation of neuronal coding in the cortex. Experiments will combine in vivo electrophysiology, 2-photon imaging and optogenetics to study how dendritic spikes lead to synaptic plasticity and adaptation in the somatosensory cortex.

For recent publications see, for example: Buchanan et al. (2010) Neuron; Chamberlain et al. (2012) Nature Neuroscience; Tigaret et al. (2016) Nature Communications; Teles-Grillo Ruivo et al. (2017) Cell Reports; Jackson et al. (2017) Cell Reports.

The successful candidate should have a PhD in a relevant discipline. Experience in in vivo electrophysiology or 2-photon imaging techniques is essential.

For informal enquiries, please contact Mike Ashby ( or Jack Mellor (

The closing date for applications is midnight on Sunday 4 February 2018.

The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture.  We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
