EPSRC PhD Studentship in Mass Spectrometry: Development of liquid AP-MALDI mass spectrometry (MS) for microbial profiling and biotyping

University of Reading - Department of Chemistry / School of Chemistry, Food and Pharmacy

Project title: Development of liquid AP-MALDI mass spectrometry (MS) for microbial profiling and biotyping
Department/School:  Department of Chemistry / School of Chemistry, Food and Pharmacy

Supervisors:  Prof Rainer Cramer, Dr Kevin Lovelock, Dr Shabnam Iyer

Project Overview:  Preliminary data from an earlier EPSRC-funded grant (EP/L006227/1) indicates that liquid AP-MALDI MS in combination with ion mobility separation provides a highly sensitive platform for rapid assay analysis with the potential use for advanced microbial biotyping/characterisation.  Based on this data this PhD studentship project will explore the advantages of greater analytical speed, the elimination of biological matrix background, superior structural characterisation and simpler sample preparation that this new MS methodology can provide with respect to microbial biotyping in the health sciences.  The supervisory team includes academic and clinical experts in mass spectrometry, the chemistry of liquids and clinical microbiology.  This project is partly funded through an EPSRC Doctoral Training Partnership grant.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants should hold or expect to gain a minimum of a 2:1 Bachelor Degree or equivalent in the Physical or Life Sciences.
