Contract: This is a fixed term position for 12-month duration

Location: This position will be based at the Bay Campus

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to study complex flows of granular and particulate suspensions. You will join a multi-disciplinary research team at the Complex Flow Lab, Energy Safety Research Institute (ESRI) and work in cutting edge research labs at the new Swansea University Bay Campus.

The aim of the project is to explore the flow behaviour of granular materials/suspensions inside confined spaces such as fractures. We want to understand how the rheological behaviour of the granular/particulate suspension gives rise to certain observed flow patterns and transport regimes. The results of this study will be important to understand natural geophysical flows as well as industrial processes such as proppant stability and flowback in hydraulic fracturing operations.

The project involves setting up bench top experiments as well as rheometric measurements and material characterization. Data/image analysis and development of underpinning theory for the physical behaviour of the system are important tasks. You will work closely with other members of the team as well as with industrial partners and international collaborators. The project is supervised by Dr. Bjornar Sandnes.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, creative and capable individual who will be able to hit the ground running in the lab. You must have, or expect to obtain in the near future, a PhD in Engineering or Physics or a closely related discipline. You must also have prior experience in experimental work on soft/granular matter, rheometry and pattern formation.
