Laboratory Support Technician - Media Preparation

We are seeking to appoint a Laboratory Support Technician to work as part of a centralised and independently managed services team that supports the research effort in Biochemistry. The team provides microbiological growth media, a sterilisation service and some waste disposal services. You will be responsible for the preparation of microbiological growth media, including liquid media, agar plates and other commonly used solutions in biological research for use in the research laboratories. You will also provide a sterilisation service for materials prepared elsewhere in the department, as well as computer based work, maintaining laboratory records and stock taking. In addition you will comply with health and safety regulations and take responsibility for the day-to-day maintenance of equipment.

Applicants should have experience of working in a biological laboratory and have an understanding of the basic techniques used, including: sterile technique and pipetting, an ability to follow predetermined protocols consistently and accurately, as well as to write and revise SOP’s. You will have an ability to prioritise tasks in a fast paced environment and possess good communication skills and the ability to work co-operatively with others. You will also be computer literate, possess manual dexterity and a reasonable level of physical fitness.

This is a full-time permanent post funded by the Department, and is based at the New Biochemistry Building, South Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3QU.

This position is graded on the University’s Grade 4 scale, the actual starting salary offered will be based on qualifications and relevant skills acquired.
