International Student Adviser

University of Sussex - International Student Support, Student Services

The University is seeking to appoint an experienced International Student Adviser to cover a period of staff absence in the International Student Support Team. As one of four specialist advisers, you will play a key role in developing the immigration advice service offered by the team as well as undertaking casework with individual students, to support their transition into higher education and their subsequent progression through the various study levels, from pre-sessional courses through to undergraduate and postgraduate study; thereby ensuring academic progress and student retention; from prospective student through to graduation. Operating at OISC level 2, you will be responsible for accurately interpreting and keeping up-to-date with all relevant legislation relating to UK immigration law and other regulations affecting international students, ensuring that all advice is compliant with the UK Immigration Rules, Tier 4 Sponsor requirements and University policies.

The University recently renewed its Tier 4 sponsor licence and is anticipating a very busy period over the next 12 months, including a likely UKVI audit as well as a review of our own immigration-related structures and processes. We are looking for a skilled and confident adviser, with significant proven experience in a similar role, who will be able to make valuable contributions in these areas.

The successful candidate will also contribute to the wider duties of the International Student Support Team, including providing specialist welfare advice, support and referral services to international applicants, students, visiting scholars and their dependants on wider issues such as finance, accommodation, health and personal issues, as well as assistance with the international welcome programme and airport meet-and-greet service.

Substantial experience of providing professional and specialist one to one immigration advice and undertaking casework is essential, as is substantial experience of working with international students. Other essential requirements include a thorough working knowledge of UK immigration law as it relates to prospective students, students, graduates and their dependants and a thorough working knowledge of the range of issues and regulations affecting international students studying in Higher Education in the UK.

You will work closely with colleagues across the institution and play a key role in the delivery of a pro-active, professional service which aims to enhance the international student experience in line with the University’s strategic objectives.
