Main Purpose of the Post

The post requires a highly motivated person to conduct research at the Centre for Solar Energy Research (CSER), Swansea University on an 18 month EPSRC funded project. The role will be based with CSER, located in North Wales at the OpTIC Technology Centre. The project, Optical Transfer of Heat with Electrical and Light Output (OTHELLO), will combine CSER’s thin film PV expertise with that of two innovative industrial partners, Palliser Engineers Ltd and Polysolar Ltd.

 As demand grows for clean, reliable and affordable energy, the ability to maximise the use of the solar spectrum becomes ever more important. OTHELLO will exploit the characteristics of thin film PV to co-generate electricity and useful, high temperature heat (PVT) at the same time without sacrificing the level of electricity generation that PV would achieve on its own.  This innovation generates electricity from the visible spectrum while allowing the infra-red to pass through and be concentrated by optics within the PV panel.  The optics generate high temperatures useful for air conditioning, refrigeration, heating and even cooking.  This overcomes the limitations of existing configurations that use separate panels for PV and solar thermal and for which heat from PV is treated as waste and used only for water heating.   High grade heat from a vertical PVT panel can offer high rise apartments absorption cooling in Summer, heating in winter and refrigeration at any time, allowing the panels to be sized for maximum load and offering these services at the point where they are needed in the building, a space efficient and city friendly solution wherever the markets can respond to the relentless demand for better living standards.

 The role of the Research Assistant (RA) will entail conducting research in thin film semiconductor synthesis and characterisation. This RA will investigate the thin film transparent conducting oxide contacts as well as fabricating complete solar cell devices. The RA will contribute to dissemination of the research findings through preparation of reports, research publications and conference presentations.
