Research Fellow for Female Labour Supply Project in Africa and Asia

Applications are invited from PhD graduates in economics or those expecting to graduate this year to work as a postdoctoral researcher on a four-country research project, involving Professor Andy McKay, Professor Richard Disney, Dr Amalavoyal Chari and Dr Iftikhar Hussain at the University of Sussex, working closely with patterns based in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Pakistan and Rwanda.  

The successful candidate will have comprehensive background knowledge of development and/or about economics, and will have both extensive experience of working with micro level data and advanced level of expertise in stata. Field experience, as well as experience with other software packages such as R, would be an advantage but neither is required.

Our project uses existing data sources to look at the evolving nature of female labour supply in developing countries. We begin with a descriptive analysis of the evolution of female labour supply. Following this, we will seek to try to separate shorter term coping labour supply response in response to shocks from longer-term engagement with the labour market. 

Finally, we will seek to use exogenous policy or other changes in each country to identify impacts on female labour supply, again seeking to try to distinguish coping from longer term responses. More information on the project may be obtained by contacting Professor Andy McKay at

The position would suit a researcher wishing to gain additional experience before applying for academic positions or work in research environments or consulting; as well as someone hoping to increase their publication record. 

The post may involve travel to partner countries though this is not an essential requirement.
