Professor Heather Ferguson and Dr Fredros Okumu (Honorary Fellow, University of Glasgow & Director of Science, Ifakara Health Institute, Tanzania) seek a postdoctoral Research Associate to make a leading contribution to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded-project “Anopheles Funestus gene flow studies and rearing”

This project is a collaboration between the Ifakara Health Institute, Tanzania, the University of Glasgow, UK, Keele University, UK, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, UK, the Centre for Research in Infectious Disease, Cameroon and the Institute of Disease Modelling, USA. It aims to improve understanding of the ecology and population genetics of the major malaria vector Anopheles funestus in Tanzania and in several southern African countries, with the goal of using this information to motivate future control programmes. The position will be largely based at the Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) in Tanzania, an internationally recognized centre of excellence in malaria vector and public health research with whom the University of Glasgow has extensive research and training partnerships.

The post holder will be primarily responsible for leading the establishment of mosquito rearing systems within laboratory and semi-field settings at IHI, and field studies of this species’ ecology, behaviour and genetic diversity. The PDRA will also contribute to strengthening research capacity in vector ecology at the IHI through provision of training to postgraduate students associated with this project. The PDRA will conduct, manage and publish research in the area of malaria vector ecology and control, as well as assist in managing and directing this complex and challenging project.

Professor Ferguson and Dr Okumu welcome informal enquiries from potential applicants to discuss this post. Please e-mail: Heather.Ferguson@glasgow.ac.uk or fredros@ihi.or.tz.

This post is full time and has funding up to 31 August 2019.
