Research Associate

University of Bristol - School of Chemistry

Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate position in the School of Chemistry at the University of Bristol, to work under the supervision of Prof. Jonathan Reid. The position is supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council through funding from Future Formulation of Complex Products programme.

The appointment will contribute to a large collaborative project entitled Evaporative Drying of Droplets and the Formation of Micro-structured and Functional Particles and Films, led by Prof. Colin Bain (University of Durham) and in collaboration with Dr. Andrew Bayley (University of Leeds) and a team that includes 14 industrial partners. The drying of liquid droplets is a complex process with a wealth of dynamics occurring within the liquid phase. The effect of these internal processes is to change the distribution of materials in the deposit that remains after drying. In this large collaborative project, we are exploring the drying of isolated droplets, both in air or on a surface, ensembles of droplets in a spray drier, and composite droplets formed on coalescence.

Postdoctoral applicants should have a background in physical chemistry, physics or aerosol science, with a PhD (or close to completion) in a related field of either chemistry or physics. Experience in measurements or modelling of droplet drying processes is desirable but not essential. The position is funded for one year initially and the applicant should be able to start in spring 2018.

Further details can be obtained by informal enquiry to Prof. Jonathan Reid ( and additional information on the area of research can be found at:

Interviews will be held during the second half of March.

The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture.  We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
