English Language Tutor

Xi'an Jiaotong - Liverpool University – Language Centre

Applications are invited for an English language teaching position in the Language Centre (LC) at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), Suzhou, China. Candidates are primarily sought for an August 13, 2018 start; however, appointments may be made with earlier start dates. Interviews will be conducted on an ongoing basis.

Why work for the Language Centre at XJTLU?

We are a growing and dynamic international centre, currently with over 180 full-time teaching staff from twelve different countries. We are involved in the teaching of English for Academic Purposes (EAP), Chinese, and Spanish. English language activities account for the majority of the LC’s work, and there are opportunities for tutors to be involved in a range of different types of delivery, including:

  • Credit-bearing EAP modules for all undergraduate students, organized by academic subject area.
  • “Joint Delivery” modules, which are part of a recent initiative to collaboratively deliver credit-bearing content modules with other academic departments at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, based on a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) model.
  • English language courses that form part of postgraduate degree programmes.
  • A postgraduate presessional programme.
  • In-sessional, continuing support for all students across all skills.
  • Writing support via the LC Writing Centre.

Additionally, there are opportunities for staff to develop their careers by taking on managerial and administrative roles, as well as by contributing to both LC and university-level committees. All managerial, administrative, and committee roles are appointed to on a fixed-term basis, thus providing all staff members with a range of options to take on responsibilities in areas that interest them.

In addition to the above, both the centre and the wider university have a strong commitment to the professional development of LC teaching staff. At the university level, new staff are enrolled free-of-charge on a University of Liverpool certificate or postgraduate certificate programme, completion of which leads to fellowship of the UK Higher Education Academy (HEA). The LC also holds regular professional development events, and has its own English language journal (ETiC – English Teaching in China). While the LC is a teaching centre, with no specific research remit, some funding is available for staff to present at conferences that are relevant to the work of the centre, provided that this does not interfere with teaching duties.
