Salary: 200,000 to 300,000 RMB (around £22,500 to £33,800) per annum, excluding a benefit package of one round-trip international air ticket, insurance, free accommodation (a two-bedroom flat on Liangxiang campus of BIT).
Contract Type: 3 years.

Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) is a prestigious national key university in China and enjoys a high reputation in research and education in science, technology, and other areas of scholarship. It is one of the first Chinese universities to run a graduate school, and one of the national “Project 211” and “Project 985” universities received priority for development from the Chinese government. The School of International Education, BIT, started to deliver a four-year undergraduate BA (Hons) Accounting programme in association with Business Informatics, Systems and Accounting (BISA), Henley Business School, University of Reading, UK. The programme runs at BIT campus in Beijing with staff from both BIT and Henley Business School. Graduates from this programme will receive degrees and degree certificates from both BIT and the University of Reading.

We are seeking to appoint one English Language teacher to join our academic team in Beijing. The post holder’s main duties will be to teach English language to students during their first and second year of this programme. The students are required to achieve IELTS 6.5 or the University of Reading’s Test of English for Educational Purposes (TEEP) 6.5 by the end of the second academic year.

Main Responsibilities:

The post delivers English for academic purposes and academic study skills development in support of the students enrolled in joint programmes between the two institutions. Working as part of a close-knit team, the English language teacher has four main areas of responsibility:

  1. To plan and organise effective learning activities for the language level of the student cohort, in appropriate balance with the intended learning outcomes of the programme;
  2. To develop and motivate students to engage in learning, and help them to improve the quality of their work;
  3. To provide students with useful test-taking strategies, suitable for the assessment types used within and at the end of the programme;
  4. To support colleagues and students in English language events such as English conversation club.

Qualifications:

  • Relevant TEFL/TESOL qualification (e.g. teaching diploma such as DELTA certified by Cambridge English Language Assessment or Trinity College London, or PGCE with TESOL, or equivalent in China).
  • MA in Applied Linguistics, English Language Teaching, or other relevant discipline.
  • Ideally 2 years’ full-time experience of teaching and assessing English language at undergraduate level.
  • Experience of the administration of courses and modules in British/Western universities.
  • Advanced level of proficiency and communicative competence in English.
  • Excellent organisational, communication, and inter-personal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • An excellent team player.
  • A willingness to work flexibly as required.
  • Keen to develop professionally by engaging with capacity building activities.
  • Fluent English speaker.

Desirable:

  • Experience of teaching and assessment of undergraduate students in a Chinese university environment.
  • Previous experience teaching English for academic purposes and IELTS.
