PhD Studentship: Advanced Podded Intake Aerodynamics with Rolls-Royce

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in the Propulsion Engineering Centre, Cranfield University, in the field of aero-engine installation performance and aerodynamics.

The integration of an aero-engine with the aircraft poses several aerodynamic challenges with respect to intake design. This applies to current podded type configurations as well as to more embedded installation configurations. Current research at Cranfield University is developing methods for the design, optimisation and analysis of a wide range of intake configurations. In addition, novel experimental methods have been applied to the evaluation of the unsteady distorted flow fields for complex intakes.

The overall aim of the PhD research is to develop tools, experience and design guidance in the design of future aero-engine intakes in association with fan systems for future ultra-high bypass engine configurations. The main activities are expected to include design studies, novel parameterisation approaches, intake aerodynamic assessments and the investigation of methods to reduce the computational requirements for the aero-line optimization such as through response surface methods, reduced geometric parameterization or multi-fidelity approaches.


In collaboration with Rolls-Royce plc, this studentship will be paid a tax-free stipend of approximately £14,500 p.a. for 3 years, plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate

Applicants for the post must have a first-class or upper second-class degree in engineering or a related area. An aerospace background would be a distinct advantage as would experience of computational aerodynamics, aero-engine modelling and programming.
