Role Description

A 3-year position is available for a computational scientist who wants to join the Department of Physics at the University of York, to become an active developer of the CASTEP quantum-mechanical materials modelling code and undertake research projects concerned with the first principles simulation of materials, as part of the EPSRC-funded UKCP High End Computing Consortium (

The role:

As a successful candidate you will:

  • Contribute to and/or lead on the development and maintenance of the first principles software code CASTEP.
  • Participate actively in the planning and management of research projects within UKCP, including supervising the work of others and providing expert advice and guidance
  • Carry out first principles based research projects and present the results to a scientific audience
  • Contribute to and/or lead the obtaining of external research funding

Skills, experience and qualifications:

You should hold a first degree in a relevant discipline such as Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or Mathematics and a PhD or equivalent in a relevant branch of the Physical Sciences.

You will possess excellent knowledge of solid-state physics and first principles methods to engage in high quality research and will have experience of undertaking publicly evidenced high quality research in theoretical physics, chemistry or a related discipline. You should also be able to demonstrate active participation in the planning and advancement of research projects, both individually and collaboratively and the ability to lead and/or take responsibility for a small research project or identified parts of a large project.

You will have highly developed communication skills, with a good command of written and spoken English and should be able to engage effectively with a wide ranging audience, both orally and in writing. You should also be able to evidence the dissemination of research e.g. through conference/workshop; participation in public engagement events to disseminate research; published chapters in text books; published papers; articles or reviews in academic journals or elsewhere; the development of websites.

You should be able to demonstrate knowledge of a range of research software techniques and methodologies and advanced and specialist IT knowledge. The following skills are essential:

  • Demonstrable experience of scientific code development in Fortran 90 or later
  • Experience of implementing and using density functional theory based quantum mechanical modelling codes
  • Experience in parallel programming
  • Experience of software engineering, including design, quality control and testing
  • Competency in using command-line Linux
  • Well-developed analytical and coding skills
  • Experience of developing high quality research software
  • Advanced problem solving abilities

The post is full-time, 37 hours a week on a fixed-term contract for 3 years with a salary of £38,832 a year.
