Magnetic Resonance Imaging Research Physicist

St George's, University of London - Molecular & Clinical Sciences

A MRI Research Physicist position is available for 4 years funded by the Medical Research Council.

The programme grant aims to coordinate the investigations, using state of the art techniques, of patients with known categories (phenotypes) of primary lymphoedemaand related lymph disorders.

The proposed MRC programme of work intends to develop Contrast Enhanced-MR Lymphography/lymphangiography and apply it to understanding mechanisms for lymphoedema in the peripheral lymphatic vessels of primary lymphoedema and lymphatic malformations (arms and legs). It is also intended to develop intranodal MR lymphangiography for imaging of central lymphatic vessels (contrast administered into lymph nodes under ultrasound guidance).

The postholder will be responsible for developing and carrying out the MRL studies under the supervision of Professor Franklyn Howe in the MRI research unit at St George’s University of London (SGUL). The MRI physicist will have a specific role to further develop our MRI lymphangiography technique and associated image processing methods for analysis. Multiparametric statistical and pattern recognition techniques will be used to relate image characteristics to clinical patient groups and other imaging methods particularly ICG lymphography and lymphoscintigraphy.

The post holder could be immediately post PhD, but some post-doc experience of image processing and software use would be desirable. No knowledge of lymphatics or MR lymphangiography will be needed as there will be every opportunity to learn once in post. An academic interest and initiative which allows for development of the MRL programme will be advantageous.

The salary for the role will be within the SGUL Grade 6/7 range, depending on experience.

SGUL Grade 6: £32.548 - £38,833 plus £3,027 London Allowance

SGUL Grade 7: £39,992 - £44,992 plus 33,027 London Allowance.
