The project aims to apply scattering correlations techniques for acoustic imaging in turbid media. Acoustic imaging has lower resolution than its optical counterpart, but can be applied in environments where absorption impede light propagation, such as underwater. On the other hand underwater environments are often complicated, full of moving obstacles and bubbles, which scatter the sound waves. The transport properties of such scattering media is not determined only by the individual properties of their constituents, but also (and foremost) by their mesoscopic arrangements, making them an elegant example of naturally occurring metamaterials. As they are disordered in nature the transport properties of sound through them is known only in a statistical sense, making it impossible to perform any acoustic imaging or echolocation through them with standard means.

In this project we aim to implement the correlation-based techniques recently developed for optical imaging to acoustic imaging and echolocation, thus bridging the gap between two disciplines, acoustics and multiple scattering Physics.
