Funded EngD Scholarship: Advanced Clean Water Treatment at Tata (ACWAT)

The steel industry is a heavy user of water with specific consumption in the range 3 to 60 m3/tonne steel produced. At Tata Steel Port Talbot, there are a range of challenges linked to water quality and usage requiring urgent attention. One of these challenges is the condensate water which gets heavily loaded with organic and inorganic substances causing bacterial growth and upsets in the system. Other challenges include optimisation of flocculent dosage, water demineralisation, metal removal form water and water re-use opportunities. Need has hence arisen for in-depth understanding of the water quality problems at Tata and evaluation of efficient and reliable technologies to address them.

Project Aims:

The overall aim of the project is to develop an in-depth understanding of the water quality issues at Tata and evaluate new treatment technologies to address them. To achieve this, the following objectives are set.

  1. Prioritise the water quality challenges to address
  2. Evaluate the type and sources of contaminants
  3. Evaluate options for minimising water contamination
  4. Evaluate potential treatment technologies - single and hybrid (e.g. AOPs, membrane, flocculation etc.)
  5. Select and scale up a suitable option.


Candidates should hold an Engineering or Physical Sciences degree with a minimum classification level of 2:1 or equivalent relevant experience. This project is suitable for a candidate with a background in Chemical Engineering.
