Funded EngD Scholarship: Big Data Analytics of the Port Talbot Hot Strip Mill

Swansea University - Engineering

Start date: October 2018

Sponsoring Company: Tata Steel

The Tata Steel integrated steel plant in Port Talbot collects vast amounts of data in the various works areas. The Hot Mill is the bottleneck of the plant and if manipulated properly, the data generated can be a gold mine of opportunity. Data is stored in various formats in huge quantities, calling for a need to use novel analysis techniques in order to functionalise it.

The idea is to process the data & display it in such a way that it improves decision making processes for the day technical team.

One second of saved processing time per bar results in a £1M benefit in speed of work, thus this type of work can yield huge cost benefits!

Project Aims:

  1. Spend time on plant to understand origin of data and how it relates to the physical reality of the process
  2. Use novel data analysis techniques to improve understanding of the hot rolling process & associated variation
  3. Identify areas of opportunity to decrease process variation
  4. Identify whether data can be used to monitor asset integrity and optimise maintenance schedules

Candidates should hold an Engineering or Physical Sciences degree with a minimum classification level of 2:1 or equivalent relevant experience.

The candidate will have a degree in Data Science, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or other Engineering/Science discipline, and have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

The candidate must have own means of transport and will be expected to spend some time in various operational sites in order to broaden horizons and improve understanding of the Tata Steel product range.
