Granta Backbone Network Specialist

The University of Cambridge is seeking a wider metropolitan area network fibre infrastructure specialist to assist in maintaining and extending the Universities' private fibre optic network, also known as the Granta Backbone Network (GBN). Initially installed 25 years ago, the GBN currently extends over 55km of fibre optic ducting across the City, feeding approximately 200 institutions. This is an unestablished permanent full-time post.

You will have a good education to degree level or equivalent, and have an extensive background in fibre network infrastructure planning and the necessary understanding to implement extensions, as well as maintain service levels to existing users. The role holder will provide support to the GBN manager and be expected to manage all aspects of, and execute, numerous projects in parallel. The role holder will exercise considerable interpersonal and self-management skills, be motivated and possess an enthusiastic attitude to work whilst providing a good service to those that the network supports. The successful candidate will demonstrate a thorough understanding and show experience of liaising with civil and cabling contractors, successful management of projects, clerks of works, knowledge of street works standards and telecomms specifications. A good understanding of network principles will be advantageous.
