Funded EngD Scholarship: Wind Main and Waste Gas Systems Optimisation Through Use of CFD Techniques

The Tata Steel integrated steel works in Port Talbot is one of the last remaining integrated steel works in the UK. The Blast Furnaces are the main drivers of the site’s underlying financial performance. Therefore, their efficient and stable operations are paramount for the long-term future of the business.

Consistent raw materials are crucial for a stable operation of the Blast Furnaces. These raw materials are ferrous materials (sinter, pellets and lump ores) and coke and injection coal. Sinter, the most economic of the ferrous materials, is made on-site by the sinter plant. As there an increased demand for sinter there is a drive to produce more efficiently. One of the key parameters affecting production is suction pressure. Understanding gas flow through the waste gas system is therefore of vital importance.

Project Aims:

  1. Spend time on plant to familiarise oneself with the process
  2. Build a Computational Fluid Dynamics model of the existing wind main and waste gas system and validate this against actual performance
  3. Identify manners in which to improve the efficiency of the systems such that the strand suction pressure can be increased with existing fan capacity


Candidates should hold an Engineering or Physical Sciences degree with a minimum classification level of 2:1 or equivalent relevant experience. This project is suitable for a candidate with a background in physical science, chemical engineering, process engineering, or materials science with an affinity of instrumentation and industrially focused research.

Funding Details

The scholarship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a tax free stipend of £20,000 p.a.
