Funded EngD Scholarship: Development of Next Generation of High Quality Coated Steel for Automotive Applications

The influence of MgZn Metallic Coatings on the Surface Characteristics and Performance of Full-Finish Automotive Steels - with Tata Steel Strip UK now looking to develop its ability to manufacture Magnesium-Zinc coated steels, and the current interest in surface low waviness products for automotive applications, the aim of this project is to bring these two topic areas together into one research programme.

The waviness characteristics of galvanised products have a major influence over the final paint appearance of exterior automotive body panels. And with leading vehicle manufacturers constantly looking to reduce the weight of their new models, thinner paint systems are now being applied to body structures. This in turn means that the underlying steel product now has a greater potential to impact on paint performance and quality, as valued by not just the automotive manufacturer, but more importantly the final end customer.

There are a number of parameters which are associated with achievement of the final waviness of a steel surface, including the products metallurgical composition, and the process route by which it is manufactured. This project will look specifically at those parameters associated with Magnesium-Zinc coated steels, and identify the differences with this type of coated material in comparison with more traditional hot-dip galvanised steels.

Project Aims: 

  • Carry out a comprehensive review of current coating developments
  • Design and develop new concepts in coating for Automotive Steels
  • Evaluate and understand the factors influencing waviness and how to use that to advance the product

Eligibility
Candidates should hold an Engineering or Physical Sciences degree with a minimum classification level of 2:1 or equivalent relevant experience. This project would be suitable for someone with a degree in chemistry, physics, or materials engineering.
