Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Robot Mapping and 3D Reconstruction

University of Oxford - Department of Engineering Science

Parks Road, Oxford

We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Robot Mapping and 3D Reconstruction to join the Department of Engineering Science. The post is funded by EPSRC and is fixed-term until 31 March 2021.

You will be a key member of the Dynamic Robot Systems Group (DRS), part of Oxford Robotics Institute (ORI). You will work with platforms such as the Anymal quadruped. Legged robots have recently advanced to the level that deployments in industrial sites is now practical. We are interested in putting these robots to work in the field: carrying out industrial surveys, building reconstructions of industrial sites and acting as a mobile sensor node.

You will develop methods to fuse heterogeneous sensor inputs into large-scale, consistent 3D reconstructions. This work will involve simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) and change detection. Research will leverage previous work within ORI such as the StaticFusion and BorgCube systems.

You will carry out research in the areas described above; write software to group standards; and carry out field trials using the Anymal quadruped. You will take an active role in the development of software and mechatronic aspects of our robots.

You should possess a PhD/DPhil in robotics, estimation or computer vision (or be near completion). In addition to this you should have expertise in Linux and C++/Python software development as well as the ability to plan and execute sensor data collections and robot experiments and to work to deadlines.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Maurice Fallon Further information can be found at

You will be required to upload a covering letter/supporting statement, including a brief statement of research interests (describing how past experience and future plans fit with the advertised position), CV and the details of two referees as part of your online application.

Only applications received before 12.00 midday on Friday 16 March 2018 can be considered.

We are currently advertising three other positions in Robotics (Space, Robot Navigation, Robot Motion Planning and Control). If you want to be considered for more than one role please ensure that you complete the online application form for each role you want to be considered for.

The Department holds an Athena Swan Bronze award, highlighting its commitment to promoting women in Science, Engineering and Technology.
