Postdoctoral Research Associate

University of Exeter - College of Humanities

The College wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the work of Professor Maria Fusaro. This full-time European Research Council funded post (AveTransRisk - grant agreement number 724544) is available on a fixed term basis from 1st June 2018 for 2 years. However, part-time working patterns over the equivalent length will also be considered. Please state in your application form which working pattern you are interested in.

The overall aim of the AveTransRisk project is to investigate the legal and economic development of General Averages comparatively across Europe. This topic has been neglected by scholars, even though rich and substantial (serial) documentary evidence about it has survived for the early modern period. The project will be articulated along two principal axes: one principally concerned with economic analysis, which will analyse (and make available) data extracted from archives in Italy (Venice, Livorno, Genoa), the Low Countries and Spain; the other concentrating on the legal and political elements behind GA historical development. You can hear more details about the project from this link: http://www.exeter.ac.uk/research/events/ercweek/professormariafusaro/

The successful applicant will be actively embedded into an exciting interdisciplinary and transnational research project. They will be based in Spain for the duration of the post and work in Spanish archives under the direction of the PI, and with the local support of Ana María Rivera Medina (UNED). Concentrating on ‘proper’ averages (not averías as a duty), and working on selected chronological samples, the PDRA will examine documents related to GA in Bilbao, Burgos, Archivo General de Simancas, Chancillería de Valladolid y General de Indias.

Please note that this post will be based in Spain and the post-holder will attend meetings regularly in the UK.

The starting salary will be from £28,936 per annum within the Grade E band (£26,495 - £33,518).

About you
Applicants will possess a relevant PhD in History or another relevant field in the Social Sciences and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.
