Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Exoplanet Discovery with the PLATO Mission

University of Oxford - Department of Physics

Parks Road, Oxford

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in exoplanet discovery with the PLATO mission. The post is available as a fixed-term appointment and is offered either as full-time or part-time working (from 18.75 hours per week).

Oxford Astrophysics invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work with Professor Suzanne Aigrain on the detection and characterisation of transiting planets with the European Space Agency’s PLATO mission. PLATO, due for launch in 2026, will discover thousands of planets transiting bright stars, including habitable planets, and will probe the internal structure of the host stars using asteroseismology. Our role within the project is to minimise the impact of stellar activity on the detection and characterisation of transiting exoplanets. The postholder will help define and optimise algorithms, which will ultimately be included in the PLATO pipeline. They will also have the opportunity to test these algorithms on data from the TESS mission, and thus to discover and new exoplanets during the timeframe of the position, and be involved in their detailed characterisation. The postholder will be expected to write software definition documents, participate in re  gular PLATO team meetings, and promote the science objectives of the mission by presenting their research at international conferences. The postholder will have the opportunity to teach and co-supervise undergraduate research projects.

Applicants should possess, or be very close to obtaining a PhD in astrophysics or a related field, and ideally possess a background in stellar or planetary physics. Previous experience in the field of transiting exoplanet discovery and characterisation will be advantageous.

Please direct enquiries about the role to Suzanne Aigrain (

You will be required to upload a brief statement of research interests, CV and details of two referees as part of your online application.

Only applications received before 12.00 midday on Tuesday 3 April 2018 can be considered.
