Research Associate – Project Reputation Using Digital Technologies

University of the West of England, Bristol - Faculty of Business & Law

Fixed term period: 24 Months

Research at Big Data Analytics Laboratory (BDAL) addresses a wide range of topics relating to the implementation of novel and emerging technologies, e.g. Big Data Analytics, Deep Learning, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, etc.

We are keen to recruit a Research Associate with experience in the development of digital solutions for the construction industry.

Specifically, the Research Associate will be responsible for conducting academic and industrial research within the context of Big Data Analytics, and Machine Learning for Building Management Systems (BMS).

A BMS is a computer-based system that monitor and control electromechanical functions (heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, etc.) in facilities (hospitals, airports, universities, shopping centres, public buildings, etc.) to ease their day-to-day management.

BMS incorporates IoT-enabled assets (i.e. a collection of sensors and electronic devices connected to the web) to improve the efficiency of the facility. Currently, the price of BMS are exorbitant and are only employed by large facilities that can afford the initial investment.

Existing BMS solutions do not fully provide IoT-enabled intelligent capabilities such as predictive maintenance (e.g. to predict when machinery needs repair) and prescriptive operational plans. Also, BMS has not been fully developed with cybersecurity in mind, which makes them vulnerable to attacks that can drastically disrupt buildings operations.

The Research Associate will be part of a team of researchers to deliver a Holistic Digital Solution for secure and affordable BMS Solution.
