Research Assistant/Associate (Social Media Analytics) - D102383R

Newcastle University - Computing

Salary: £27,285 to £28,936 (PhD near completion or £29,799 to £38,833 (PhD Awarded)

Closing date: 22 March 2018

You will contribute to our on-going research in the area of social media analytics. Specifically, you will analyse Twitter data streams and the Twitter users network using machine learning and social graph mining techniques, with the goal to semi-automatically identify Twitter users who are most likely to respond well to health prevention campaigns against tropical virus epidemics such as Dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya, specifically in Brazil.

You will have an awarded PhD in Computer Science or nearing completion, with essential prior experience in data analytics and good programming skills (Python or Java), and desirable prior experience in predictive analytics (supervised, semi-supervised, and unsupervised learning).

Technical skills required include programming but you must also demonstrate a passion for data analysis, and be prepared to learn new techniques quickly. As is typical of data-driven projects, you must also be prepared to try and compare multiple approaches with an open mind. You must be keen to work as part of a team and to interact remotely with colleagues (who are located in Brazil) and be prepared to discuss approaches and solutions with them, sometimes also dealing with cultural differences.

The research is conducted as part of the Leveraging Gamification and Social Networks for Improving Prevention and Control of Zika project supported by British Council, in collaboration with a consortium of Universities in Brazil: PUC-Rio de Janeiro, University of Alagoas, and University of Pernambuco. It builds on prior research conducted by a number of graduate students during the past three years. In Newcastle, the leading researchers are in the Scalable Computing group (Dr Missier) and in SRS (Secure and Resilient Systems), Prof. Romanovsky.

The post is fixed term for a duration of 10 months.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Dr Paolo Missier:  telephone: +44 191 208 4146.
