Purpose and Main Duties

The Department of English and Humanities at Birkbeck, University of London invites applications for a Lecturer B in Early Medieval Literature and Culture.

The Department offers world-class research and teaching across a range of critical and creative fields from the early medieval period to the twenty-first century. It is home to over twenty taught BA, MA and MFA programmes including the highly regarded MA in Medieval Literature & Culture, and a large, motivated cohort of PhD students. Academics in the Department are active researchers, many with international reputations, and we are proud of our track record in developing innovative, often interdisciplinary, research and teaching.

The successful candidate will actively contribute to this vibrant research community. They will make a full contribution to the Department’s teaching and international research profile and engage with School and College level initiatives relevant to their area of expertise.

Candidate Requirements

You will work with the English and Arts and Humanities subject areas to contribute to the delivery and expansion of existing programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You will make a substantial contribution to teaching (including early medieval literature and culture), research and administration. You will also contribute to other areas of strategic relevance to the Department’s teaching and research. We particularly welcome applications from experts in early medieval literature and culture with research interests in one or more of the following: ‘race’, gender and sexuality, material culture, visual culture, and the medical humanities.

Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant subject area, with a strong publication record and ambitious research plans, as well as teaching experience at HE level. Teaching experience at undergraduate degree level is essential.

Teaching experience at postgraduate degree level is desirable. The ability to teach Old English is essential, and the ability to teach Old Icelandic/Old Norse is desirable. You will be able to demonstrate a commitment to the development of innovative approaches to teaching, as well as undertaking appropriate administrative duties.

Candidates will be expected to be able to teach across our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Further Information

Salary: Grade 8 of the College's London Pay Scale which is £43,642 rising to £51,372 per annum.

This post is full time, 35 hours per week (1.0 FTE) and open-ended. The salary quoted above is on the College's London Pay Scale and includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the Greater London area.
The initial salary will be dependent on the skills and experience of the successful applicant. The appointment is subject to a probationary period of 36 months. Birkbeck also provides a generous defined benefit pension scheme, 31 days paid leave, flexible working arrangements and other great benefits.
