(Economic History)

Waseda University, a long-established private university located in central Tokyo, invites applications for a full-time, faculty position* in Economic History in the Faculty of Political Science and Economics, which seeks to strengthen its position in that field. The appointment will be made at the rank of either Professor or Associate Professor (for a tenure-track position, Associate Professor only), beginning in April 2019.

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be competent to teach courses on Economic History offered in the Faculty's English-based Degree Program, and on related topics at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level in English and/or Japanese.
  2. Be able to conduct thesis advice/supervision regarding Economic History at both undergraduate and postgraduate level in English and/or Japanese.
  3. Be competent to conduct research in and to teach Economic History from the 17th century to the present time through an international or global perspective.
  4. Preference will be given to those with prior teaching experience of relevant courses.
  5. Have a Ph.D. in hand or its equivalent in research experience

*The position (tenured or tenure-track) will be determined by educational and academic research achievement, performance in the selection procedure, and other factors. Each successful applicant will be informed of the position decided and its concomitant salary in the interview with the Senior Dean. The initial term for the tenure-track position as an associate professor without tenure is three years, with a possible extension of two years after evaluation in an interim review that takes place during the second or third year. The final review is carried out before the end of the fourth year after the tenure track position begins. More details concerning the tenure track system will be given at the first interview with the selection committee.

Working Conditions

  • Document screening (The result of this screening to be communicated to candidates in late July 2018.)
  • A first interview with the selection committee that includes a mock lecture and/or academic research presentation
  • A second interview with the Senior Dean
