The Faculty of Science has a global perspective focused on the challenges facing humanity over the next 50 years. Irrespective of the metrics used, our research is highly regarded nationally and internationally and we have world-leading expertise across a diversity of disciplines embracing the agricultural, chemical, earth, environmental, physical, human and health sciences. Our research excellence is built around the core, disciplinary strengths of our schools that serve to integrate and connect our teaching with our research. The University of Western Australia is rated at above, or well-above, world standard in 38 fields of research, and 79% of these are in a science field.

The School of Psychological Science at UWA is ranked 41st in the QS World University Rankings by Subject and the discipline was judged as “well above world standard” [the highest rating of 5] in all three Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) assessments in Psychology, most recently in 2015. Only one other Australian university has achieved this maximum level of performance across all three ERA rounds. The School hosts research programs in several centres, including the Centre for the Advancement of Research into Emotion and the Autism Co-operative Research Centre. The School also runs advanced postgraduate courses offering a combined training in Master of Clinical Psychology or Clinical Neuropsychology, and a Ph.D. Additionally, Colin MacLeod was recently awarded a prestigious Laureate Research Fellowship in ‘Differentiating the Cognitive Basis of Unproductive versus Productive Worry’ by the Australian Research Council. In the last year, staff in Psychological Science have secured over $6M in research funding directly to the school, and have collaborated on many other successful funding applications. Psychological Resilience is a significant, strategic growth area for the School.

About the opportunity
Contributing to two of the Faculty’s six, strategic themes, you will contribute to ‘Preventing, Diagnosing and Treating Disease’ and ‘Enhancing Physical, Mental and Social Wellbeing and Performance’ by playing a leading role within the School of Psychological Science in advancing research and teaching on the basis of individual differences in cognitive aspects of psychological resilience. 

As the successful candidate, you will be expected to make a major contribution to furthering the international research reputation of the School as a global leader in the field of psychological resilience. This will involve establishing and strengthening innovative and productive research collaborations within the School, across cognate disciplines within UWA, with international experts, and with industry partners. It is expected that you will demonstrate an ability to attract major, external, research funding on the variation in factors that underpin the cognitive aspects of psychological resilience. You will also play a key role in developing and delivering research-led teaching in the field of psychological resilience. These responsibilities will include teaching within undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, supervising research students at honours and postgraduate levels and, where appropriate, contributions to postgraduate applied training and supervision.

To be considered for this position, you must hold a PhD in Psychology and have an established track record in the field of Psychological Resilience, particularly concerning its cognitive basis, with high quality publication outputs and grant funding success, relative to opportunity. High quality teaching experience in the area of Psychological Resilience and supervision experience of Honours and PhD students will be essential in this appointment.
