The Hertie School of Governance, Berlin

A European Professional School for Public Policy is recruiting a

Professor of Public Management and Leadership
Open Rank

The Hertie School of Governance is an international teaching and research center of excellence that prepares students for leadership positions in government, business, and civil society. An internationally recruited faculty, interdisciplinary in outlook, research, and teaching, offers analytically challenging and practice-oriented courses on governance, policy analysis, management, and leadership. As a professional school, we seek faculty members with a strong commitment to high-quality teaching. Our goal is to help students grow intellectually in a professional, research-intensive environment, characterized by public debate and engagement.

The Hertie School is recruiting a Professor of Public Management and Leadership. We understand “public” in a broad sense, including, next to a core concern of managing and leading public agencies, quasi-public and non-profit organizations. Likewise, leadership includes stewardship of the public good, and contributions to solving public problems.

We are particularly interested in candidates combining interdisciplinary and comparative, cross-sector and cross-country, perspectives with an applied focus. Applicants for this position should have a doctoral degree in any of the major social sciences (economics, political science, sociology, law) or related fields (e.g. public administration, public policy, organization studies). We welcome candidates with a focus on organizational behavior and development.

As for all professorial appointments at the Hertie School, we seek faculty with a commitment to intensive, high-quality teaching and innovative research. High practice-relevance in research and teaching is required, as is a willingness to engage in public debates and with policy-makers. Candidates are expected to show full commitment to working in an interdisciplinary, international environment with English as the language of instruction and operation. The successful candidate will teach courses in the School’s Master, Executive, and PhD programmes.

The position is full-time, rank open. We are as interested in attracting established scholars at full professor levels as we are in mid and early career candidates. The expected start date is fall 2018 or spring 2019.

The Hertie School particularly encourages applications from female scholars and from candidates with international backgrounds.

We offer an internationally competitive salary in line with the candidate’s qualifications, excellent working conditions, a vibrant research environment, and a lively community of policy debate in the political heart of Germany.

The deadline for the submission of applications is 4 April 2018. The Hertie School will review applications that include a letter of motivation, a current curriculum vitae (publication list, degrees earned, if applicable: positions held, teaching experience, research projects, awards received), two writing samples and, if applicable, teaching evaluations. Applicants should list contact information for three references. Early career candidates should have three letters of recommendation sent from professors familiar with their work.
