Project Detail:

Joining one of the largest University based automotive propulsion research groups in the world this project is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of state-of-the art methodology for future advanced automotive propulsion systems.  This project is a high profile, national project working with several internationally recognised industrial and academic partners.  The overall aim is to revolutionise the way in which next generation automotive propulsion systems perform thorough the use of optical sensors.

Optical measurement techniques are often used in experimental investigations for research on engine performance and to aid their development and calibration processes. Using optical sensors on production engines is a challenging aspiration – particularly in making them robust, have high temporal response while also being cost effective. This project will investigate bringing research methods closer to production by considering these aspects while considering what optically obtained information is valuable for an engine control system. The impact of a successful project is to deliver a technology that can significantly reduce automotive combustion emissions that are harmful to local air quality.

Entry requirements:

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering or a related subject such as physics. A relevant Master’s degree and/or experience in one or more of the following will be an advantage: Optical Engineering, Engines or other Automotive related background.

Funding information:

The studentship offered is for 3 years and is intended to start by July 2018. The studentship provides a tax-free stipend of up to £16,000 per annum for up to three years plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate.  International (non EU) students may apply however the total value of the studentship will be used towards the cost of the International tuition fee in the first instance.
