Oak Foundation Homelessness Intern

Heriot-Watt University - School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society

This programme will offer a series paid internships to postgraduate social researchers. We are recruiting two interns, one to start 1st May 2018 to 30th October 2018 and one from 1st November 2018 to 30th April 2019.

We envisage most applicants being current or recent doctoral students, but are also happy to receive applications from candidates with relevant Masters degrees or excellent undergraduate degrees. We interpret 'social research' very broadly to include the full range of social science, arts and humanities disciplines.

Interns can be based anywhere in the UK but will be expected to participate in regular Oak team meetings and strategic planning at Oak’s London office, and will be given the opportunity to attend external meetings relevant to their work. The day-to-day management of the interns' work will be undertaken by relevant Oak staff, but research mentoring and support will be provided by the I-SPHERE team.

The Intern's role will be to work with Oak Foundation staff to:

  • collate and analyse information Oak receives from partners about their progress;
  • respond to one-off information needs of the Oak team
  • undertake an independent research project agreed with Oak staff and supported by the I-SPHERE team

Interns will have the opportunity to undertake an independent research project during their tenure. We therefore invite all candidates to submit a brief research proposal of up to 1,500 words, covering background, research questions and methods with their application.

We welcome proposals focused on exploring the experiences of homeless individuals or families from both adult and child perspectives. We are looking for specific and unique proposals that describe how you would go about identifying and answering relevant research questions that would make a significant contribution to the work of Oak’s Housing and Homelessness programme.

The successful candidate will be expected to work from home, with regular travel to London and occasional travel to Edinburgh.

The post is available for 6 months. Interviews are expected to be held in London on 23rd April 2018.

See Homelessness Intern information at https://i-sphere.org/  for further information on applying and information from our current intern on what you can expect.

Informal enquiries can be made by emailing Jill McIntyre (Project Coordinator) at j.mcintyre@hw.ac.uk. Please note enquiries will be normally be dealt with on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
