Research Associate in Resource Characterisation for Tidal Energy

Joining the internationally renowned Institute for Energy Systems in the School of Engineering you will be working on advanced resource characterisations for tidal energy applications within the project team working on the €5M Horizon-2020 RealTide project. This is a multidisciplinary team including experimental hydrodynamicists, electrical power engineers, electrical machines specialists and computational modellers.

RealTide is focussed on delivering design improvements for tidal turbines subjected to real environmental flows and real loadings resulting from turbulence in the flow and wave-current effects. Project activities span numerical modelling, scale model tank-testing and field measurement campaigns. You will be developing large-scale hydrodynamic models of tidal sites (incorporating coupled waves and currents) that, together with your robust data analyses of existing and new field measurement campaigns, will result in advanced flow characterisations. These will be subsequently used by the entire project team particularly in the CFD modelling and physical tank-testing activities.

This role is for 24 months with the potential for a further 12 month extension.
