Research Associate in Transport in Porous Media

Heriot-Watt University - School of Engineering and Physical Sciences

£31,604 - £38,833

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic postdoctoral research associate to work on our ERC funded project “Microscale Processes Governing Global Sustainability”, under the supervision of Prof Maroto-Valer (

The post holder is required to:      Conduct collaborative interdisciplinary research on flow in porous media and developing other as-required laboratory work to support the activities of the team, particularly conducting flow through tests on manufactured porous replicas and other porous media;    Contribute to the design and building experimental set ups for micromodel testing and core flooding experiments;   Design and conduct multi-phase flow experiments under high-pressure and high-temperature and reservoir conditions;   Have strong experience in conducting micromodel testing and/or core flood experiments;  Provide the required information (e.g. evolution fronts of pressure, pH, and composition) at the pore level to the team for the development of numerical transport models:  Strong collaboration with the team to integrate laboratory results and numerical modelling for understanding transport phenomena in porous media.

The successful applicant must hold a PhD (or about to obtain) in chemical engineering or related discipline (e.g. petroleum engineering, geosciences, chemistry) with background and expertise in reactive flow in porous media. The role holder will work in a multidisciplinary team to conduct frontier research on laboratory experiments on flow in porous media and provide experimental data to support numerical modelling activities.

The post is available from 1st May 2018 for 24 months in the first instance and can be extended further.
