Assistant Librarian (South Asian and Development Studies)

Full time (35 hours per week – 1 FTE)
This post is a maternity cover for up to one year.

The role and its responsibilities
The role of the Assistant Librarian (South Asian and Development Studies) will be based in SOAS Library (one of the five UK National Research Libraries) and will support teaching, learning and research by focusing on:

  • Selection and preparation of materials and maintaining the South Asian & Development Studies collections;
  • Development and exploitation of electronic and printed resources to support teaching, learning and research in these subject fields;
  • Promotion of these resources to SOAS students and staff, and to a wide range of national and international visitors;
  • Induction, information and digital literacy skills training.

Skills and experience
You will have a sound knowledge of the use of computer applications to facilitate access to and exploitation of electronic resources. Moreover, fluency in at least one major South Asian language (e.g. Hindi, Urdu, Bengali) and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in these languages is desirable, while the ability to communicate effectively in English is essential.

About Library and Information Services
The Library & Information Services Directorate (LIS) is responsible for the SOAS Library (the UK National Research Library for Asia, Africa and the Middle East), the provision of the Information Systems, the Learning Resources, ICT, Multimedia and Print Services upon which SOAS' Learning, Teaching and Research depends.
