Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Global Systems

University of Exeter - College of Life and Environmental Sciences - Geography

Exeter is a major centre of excellence for Earth systems and environmental sciences with a strong submission to REF2014 (www.exeter.ac.uk/ref2014/submission/earthsystems). Building on >£100 million investment over the last decade in interdisciplinary environmental science, we are creating a new Global Systems Institute, which aims to be thought-leading in understanding global changes, solving global challenges, and helping create a flourishing future world together, through transformative research and education. To help create this exciting new Institute, we wish to expand our research and education activity in Earth system science and the understanding and modelling of coupled natural and human global systems.

We are looking for people who undertake world-class research in Earth system science that addresses the coupled evolution of life and the planet, the challenges of interconnected global changes, and pathways to a sustainable future. You will work closely with the inaugural Director of the Global Systems Institute, Professor Tim Lenton. We welcome applications from diverse disciplinary backgrounds working to better understand and predict global changes. You should hold a PhD in a relevant area and have an independent, internationally-recognised research programme which is complementary to existing Exeter strengths.

You will be able to demonstrate:

  • A track record in refereed publications and attracting research funding or demonstrable potential to attract such funding,
  • Teamwork skills to work in collaboration with existing group members,
  • An active and supportive approach to inter-disciplinary research, fostering interactions both within the University and externally with business and industry,
  • The aptitude to develop a variety of strategies to promote and assess learning,
  • Enthusiasm for delivering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

For appointments at Senior Lecturer level, in addition to the above you must be able to demonstrate a strong potential for research leadership, proven success in significant grant capture and relationships with external organisations and funders.

Previous industrial experience is also welcomed.

What we can offer you

  • Freedom (and support) to pursue your intellectual interests and to work creatively across disciplines to produce internationally exciting research.
  • Support teams that understand the University wide research and teaching goals.
  • An Innovation, Impact and Business directorate that works closely with our academics providing specialist support for external engagement and development.
