PhD-student (Early Stage Researcher, ESR)

Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS)

The Leibniz-Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS), a world-renowned institute in the field of atmospheric research, is expanding its successful experimental (laboratory and field) investigations in the area of aerosol cloud interactions. In this context, we are looking for

a PhD-student (Early Stage Researcher, ESR)

The position is located at the Institute for Tropospheric Research’s cloud laboratory and part of the CLOUD-MOTION Marie Curie ITN project, a network of 15 ESRs enrolled in a European network of academic and private institutions. It is limited to 3 years, and the salary level is according to EU-Marie-Curie-ITN-regulations.

The main task of the successful candidate will be the planning and implementation of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and ice nucleating particle (INP) related measurements at the CLOUD chamber at CERN, and at the TROPOS ice laboratory, as well as the interpretation and publication of the results.

Though the focus of the project is mainly on experimental work, the candidate should be interested in working on theoretical aspects as well. Besides the mandatory background concerning atmospheric aerosol particle physics and chemistry, interest and expertise in organizing and participating in laboratory and field measurement campaigns is most welcome. Fluent English in spoken and written form is mandatory.

According to EU eligibility criteria, researchers may be of any nationality, BUT must be at their early career stage and may not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the date of recruitment.

We are offering the possibility to work in the highly recognized and interdisciplinary CLOUD-MOTION team, at one of the most renowned atmospheric research institutes, and in one of the most attractive cities in Germany.

The participation in the Leipzig Graduate School for Clouds, Aerosol, and Radiation is recommended, guaranties a structured doctoral training program and offers the acquisition of a variety of interdisciplinary competences and qualifications.

Our institute offers family-friendly conditions. TROPOS seeks to increase the percentage of women in scientific and science-related positions. Therefore, female researchers are especially encouraged to apply. Physically challenged applicants will be given preference if equally qualified.
