Research Associate/Fellow in Nanocomposite Coatings with Graphene for Ultra-Low-Wear (fixed term)

Salary: £26,495 to £38,833 per annum (pro rata if applicable), depending on skills and experience (minimum £29799 with relevant PhD). Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance

Applications are invited for the above position offered in the Coatings and Materials for Energy (CME) team in the Faculty of Engineering, University of Nottingham. The team has world-class facilities for design, manufacturing, testing and modelling in advanced coatings as well as a proven track record in delivering high quality research, leading to high impact peer reviewed publications.

The fellow will join a vibrant, growing and widely recognised research team which will involve collaboration with pioneering scientists and engineers.

The purpose of this role is to conduct research in an EPSRC funded Impact Acceleration Fund project on developing multi-functional nanocomposites with graphene for ultra-low-wear applications. The research team has developed an emerging liquid based thermal spray technology to incorporate graphene into engineering coatings. The candidate will conduct research into design and manufacture of new equipment, experimentation in suspension thermal spray, characterisation of nanoparticles in TEM and Raman, and tribology of coatings. We are keen to hear from candidates with high ambition in emerging technologies research.

Candidates must have an excellent understanding, and preferably direct experience, of one or more of the following areas: graphene, nanocomposites and thermal spray coatings.

Candidates must hold a PhD degree (obtained or thesis submitted) or equivalent in materials engineering/ chemistry/ physics and have relevant experience in one or more of the technical areas illustrated above. In addition, they should be confident, have good analytical, R&D, leadership and communication skills and the ability to work in a team. Experience of working with functional materials industry is preferred.

The work will be led by Dr Tanvir Hussain at the Faculty of Engineering.

This role will be offered on a full-time, fixed term contract for 14 months. Applications for job share will be accepted.
