Funded PhD Opportunities in Drawing and Film at Arts University Bournemouth

Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) is pleased to offer the following funded PhD opportunities to outstanding applicants seeking to begin a programme of research at AUB in September 2018:

  1. One fully funded studentship, offered on a full-time basis only. The successful applicant will have their fees paid and be awarded a University stipend (£14,533).
  2. One fees only bursary for part-time study.

The awards will be made for the following PhDs based on the strength of applications:

PhD in Drawing

Collapsible spaces: Contemporary drawing practice and evolving places of retreat and refuge in the 21st century

Supervision will be led by Professor Siân Bowen, Professor of Drawing

PhD in Film

Reflect the industry; challenge the industry: the transformation of film education in the face of technical, structural and ethical change

Supervision will be led by Dr. Mary Oliver, Dean of Faculty of Media and Performance

How to Apply

  • All applicants should apply via the University’s online application portal:
  • As part of the application you will be required to submit a 1500 word proposal that follows the guidelines available on the website; a CV; and two academic references.
  • You should state in your proposal that you wish to be considered for either the studentship or the bursary.
  • Closing date for applications is 30 May 2018. Successful candidates will be invited for interview at Arts University Bournemouth w/c 25 June 2018.

Person Specification and Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates for a PhD studentship must demonstrate outstanding qualities and be motivated to complete a PhD in three years (full-time) or five years (part-time).
  • Applicants should hold a first or upper-second-class Honours degree and a Master’s degree.
  • Applicants with alternative qualifications/experience will be considered if they can demonstrate relevant achievement. Applicants whose first language is not English will be expected to have an IELTS score of at least 7.0 with 7.0 minimum in writing.
  • In addition to satisfying basic entry criteria, AUB will look closely at the research potential and academic qualities of each candidate and what they can bring to their chosen research project in order to ensure successful and timely completion.
  • Please note that this award is only available to nationals from the UK and EU and is not open to applicants who are liable to pay academic fees at the international fee rate and/or require a Tier 4 visa.
