Professor of EU Competition Law

Tilburg University – Tilburg Law School (TLS)

Tilburg Law School (TLS) is looking for a full professor with expertise in the broader field of competition law. The Chair will be positioned at TILEC, a Center of Excellence at Tilburg University, globally renowned for its interdisciplinary research on economic governance. The selected candidate is expected to play a leading role in continuing and expanding our top-quality research in the field and provide academic leadership in an interdisciplinary academic environment. In this respect, work with economists on research papers and contract research or developing new courses forms part and parcel of the candidate’s tasks. Candidates with a profile in the interaction of competition law with digitization or technology regulation are particularly welcome to apply.

The holder of the position will have the following functions:

  • Pursue academically path-breaking research leading to excellent publications, in terms of originality, significance and rigor, as measured by international standards.
  • Actively contribute to the operationalization of the TILEC research program.
  • Contribute to advancing interdisciplinarity, especially through the elaboration and production of joint research output.
  • Be a leading member of our staff, by participating in, and organizing events and activities, presenting and discussing research output and policy developments.
  • Represent and disseminate TILEC’s research in the broader area of competition policy.
  • Obtain external funding to support one’s own research and, if applicable, work on contract research jointly with other researchers in the fields of competition and innovation.

Administrative tasks

  • Lead the research group on competition policy.
  • If requested, be part of the institute’s management team in a leadership position.

  • If requested, act as a liaison for TILEC with other research institutes within Tilburg Law School and Tilburg University.
  • Write grant proposals and assist in the preparation of such proposals by colleagues.

  • Teach and coordinate courses at the undergraduate and LLM programs that TILEC is involved in.
  • Lead the efforts for curriculum development and reform within TILEC.
  • Supervise postgraduate research work, including supervision of PhD theses.

Applicants must:

  • Hold a doctoral degree in Law (PhD).
  • Have a proven record of outstanding and influential publications of the highest quality in the broader field of competition law and policy in top-ranked journals.
  • Have a demonstrable record of intellectual leadership in an international academic environment, for instance, by steering a research unit.
  • Have a clear and well-developed strategy for future outstanding research that will result in leading publications.
  • Be willing to engage in collaborative research with other TILEC members, and with related research centers at TiU.
  • Be interested in, and preferably used to, working in an interdisciplinary environment with other legal scholars and economists.
  • Have experience in undertaking administrative and managerial duties (e.g. management of projects and scientific personnel, organization of workshops etc).
  • Be able to provide leadership in the effective administration of TILEC and potentially contribute to strategic decisions in Tilburg Law School.
  • Have a track record of designing and delivering high-quality undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching.
  • Have experience in attracting external funding, autonomously or in collaboration with others.
  • Have experience in research supervision at postgraduate and PhD level.
  • Have excellent interpersonal and strong and effective communication skills.
  • Have perfect command of English. Knowledge of Dutch would be an asset, but it is not required. However, willingness to learn Dutch is required.
  • Be available to start working preferably as soon as possible but no later than 1 September 2018.
  • Be present at Tilburg University during working hours, and commit to being an active member of the academic community within TILEC and the Tilburg Law School.
