Further Information:

The School of Design is offering a PhD Scholarship for study commencing on 1 October 2018. The scholarship will cover full maintenance and the postgraduate research fees at the UK/EU rate. The scholarship is available to both UK/EU and international rated candidates; International candidates will need to cover the difference between the UK/EU fee rate and the international fee rate.

The School of Design Scholarship is intended to support full-time study leading to a PhD qualification within a period of three years. Applications are invited in any area of the School’s research activities. Further details about these research areas of the School can be found at

Financial Information:

The award provides full academic fees for Home/EU rated applicants or partial fees at the Home/EU rate for international applicants and a maintenance grant in accordance with the UK Research Council rate (£14,553 in Session 2017/18).

Minimum Academic Requirements (if English is not your first language, then candidates must also meet the University’s English language requirements):

Applicants will need to demonstrate the following attributes to be considered for one of the School of Design Scholarships:

  • Applicants should demonstrate a track record of excellent academic performance, as evidenced by either a first class degree OR by proof that the applicant’s performance is in the top 20% of their cohort;
  • Applicants should either have been awarded the appropriate first degree or be in their final year of study;
  • Applicants should demonstrate evidence of relevant extra-curricular activities, be they in a work or social context;
  • Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the School of Design’s English Language requirements. They are in IELTS a score of 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in any skill area.

Any Additional Requirements:

The Scholarship award must be taken up on 1 October 2018. The start date is fixed and cannot be deferred.

  • Applicants must complete all sections of the scholarship application form.
  • Applicants are welcome to attach additional documentation to strengthen their scholarship application, e.g. references.
  • Applicants must submit supporting evidence promptly when required to do so.
  • The completed form should be returned by email to, by no later than 5pm UK time on 30th April 2018.

We welcome scholarship applications from all suitably-qualified candidates, but UK black and minority ethnic (BME) researchers are currently under-represented in our Postgraduate Research community, and we would therefore particularly encourage applications from UK BME candidates. All scholarships will be awarded on the basis of merit.
