Postdoctoral Research Associate in Medicinal Chemistry

University of Oxford - Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences

Grade 7

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the research group of Dr Linda Troeberg at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, in collaboration with Dr Stephen Wren at the neighbouring Oxford Drug Discovery Institute of the University of Oxford. You will join a multi-disciplinary team to synthesise and test new structural analogues of suramin as potential treatments for osteoarthritis.

The aim of the project is to develop synthetic chemistry strategies to generate novel structural analogues of suramin and test their ability to block uptake of the metalloprotease inhibitor TIMP-3 uptake by cells using standard cell culture and immunoblotting techniques. You will have a strong background in chemistry and analytic methods, as well as an interest in biological screening and translation. You will have responsibility of designing and synthesise novel analogues of suramin, as well as testing the biological activity of novel analogues in cell culture (e.g. evaluate their toxicity and ability to block uptake of TIMP-3 by cultured cells using immunoblotting).

You will hold a PhD degree (or near completion) in synthetic chemistry. Strong research background in organic synthesis as well as excellent communication skills with the ability to present results clearly and logically, working co-operatively as part of a team as well as independently, are also essential capabilities for this post. Previous experience in synthesising suramin-like molecules, peptide synthesis and/or click chemistry and experience of cell culture, immunoblotting, ELISA, real time PCR would be desirable.

This is a full-time appointment fixed-term for 18 months.

You will be required to upload a CV and a supporting statement as part of your online application.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on Friday 13 April 2018.

Closing Date: 13-APR-2018 12:00
