Reader (Associate Professor) in Automotive Engineering

University of Bath - Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Bath is seeking to appoint a Reader in Automotive Engineering to conduct research in the field of electric motors and drives, energy storage, and further electrification of conventional propulsion systems, and deliver postgraduate taught and research programmes. The successful applicant will have notable experience in applied engineering and teaching, as well as an excellent record in research.

Based at the Department, the Powertrain and Vehicle Research Centre (PVRC) is a leading centre for theoretical, experimental, and analytical research into Powertrain systems in the UK state-of-the-art testing facilities. The PVRC’s 50-strong research team has an excellent track record in delivering industry-relevant projects, and long established collaborations with industrial partners. The Centre considers its remit to be all of the links in the chain from energy storage to its conversion into mechanical work on board a vehicle.

The cutting edge research includes whole Powertrain and major subsystems, including:

  • Internal combustion engines
  • Air path systems
  • Transmission systems
  • Electrification
  • Alternative fuels

With an impressive £8M portfolio, the PVRC has an outstanding history of securing funding from major research funders, including the UK’s Advanced Propulsion Centre, Innovate UK, and Horizon 2020. The PVRC has made a significant contribution to the continued development of low and ultra-low carbon vehicles, enhancing fuel economy, and reducing their CO2 emissions, playing a vital role in the task of making a cleaner environment. The recently secured £60M investment for the Institute of Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS) will propel the PVRC into a global leading position.

This is an excellent opportunity to design and deliver the new MSc for Automotive Engineering in the Department, including significant electrical propulsion content. The successful applicant will join a group of colleagues publishing in leading journals and engaging with industrial partners, and would make a significant contribution to research and teaching capacity in the PVRC.

The University of Bath is situated on a modern campus with excellent sports and student facilities overlooking the UNESCO-designated World Heritage City of Bath. Bath is located 100 miles west of London and is easily accessible by air, road, and rail.

The University of Bath holds Bronze Award for Athena SWAN scheme, which promotes gender equality among all disciplines. We particularly encourage applications from under-represented groups.

The role is offered on a full-time basis (36.5 hours/week) with the latest starting date of 21st December 2018.
