Job Description
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations worldwide. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK) and Rome (Italy).

EMBL is seeking a Compliance Officer operating and developing EMBL’s compliance function to join the Internal Audit Office. Internal Audit is an independent appraisal function established to examine and evaluate EMBL's activities and to assist Management in the effective discharge of their responsibilities. The successful candidate will directly report to the Head of Internal Audit and will actively co-operate with EMBL’s administrative departments and scientific units at all EMBL sites.

Principal responsibilities

  • Advising on policies, procedures or guidance related to activities that prevent illegal, unethical, or improper conduct
  • Performing on-going compliance risk assessments and identifying key areas requiring improvement action
  • Assessing selected compliance risks in collaboration with EMBL's management
  • Advising management on applicable action plans related to identified compliance risks
  • Overseeing selected compliance risks in agreement with management
  • Maintaining a compliance risk register
  • Reviewing related laws to identify changes that might affect research projects
  • Evaluating emerging compliance trends and advising management on best practices
  • Promoting compliance awareness within the organisation by providing training and access to compliance materials

Duty travel of up to 15% may be required.

Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate should hold an academic degree in related fields.

We expect the candidate to ideally have a minimum of three years of professional experience in the field of legal, compliance, internal audit or similar gained in a scientific institution. Knowledge of life science research laws, regulations and guidelines and experience related to research grants is desirable.

The candidate should be eager to learn and develop as well as be able to communicate effectively and confidently with people at all levels. Strong interpersonal skills, excellent organisational skills together with substantial teamwork experience are vital. Fluency in English is required, and a working knowledge of German would be advantageous. Proficiency in using Microsoft Office is desired.
