Research Associate in Robust Airport Decision Support for Intelligent Taxiing

University of Sheffield - Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering

Contract Type: Fixed term until 30 March 2019 to start as soon as possible

Faculty: Faculty of Engineering

Are you interested in working for a world top 100 University? We have an exciting opportunity in the University of Sheffield’s Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering, for someone who will be able to prove their ability not only to apply state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms to a complex real-world environment which is normally characterised with uncertainties but to also innovate in new algorithms for design of experiments, modelling and real-time decision support.

Candidates must hold a PhD or be close to completion (or have equivalent experience) in systems engineering based modelling, machine learning with a particular emphasis on neural-fuzzy technologies, and optimization.

The successful candidate will integrate a research team from 4 UK Universities to work on this project which is being sponsored by the UK-EPSRC on the design of a robust airport decision support system for intelligent taxiing. The research is also being supported by several UK Universities, several UK and European Airport Authorities, Rolls Royce and BAE Systems.

Automatic Control and Systems Engineering (ACSE) is one of the largest departments devoted to the subject in Europe. We are a world-leading research department, as evidenced by the results of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) exercise - out of 62 UK institutions specialising in multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary engineering, the Department was ranked first for quality of research publications and third for overall research quality. The principal investigator and line manager for this role is Professor Mahdi Mahfouf, Head of the Intelligent Systems Research Laboratory at The University of Sheffield.

We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
