Research Associates in Marine Robotics

Heriot-Watt University - School of Engineering and Physical Sciences

The Institute for Signals Sensors and Systems (ISSS) in the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences of Heriot-Watt University is recruiting Research Associates to perform cutting-edge research on marine robotics applied to the offshore energy sector. This is part of the ORCA Hub, a large Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Hub, delivered in collaboration with Edinburgh University, Imperial College London, Liverpool and Oxford Universities and supported by over 30 companies representing the major players in the offshore energy sector. The positions represent a unique opportunity to work with truly world leading academics and fellow research associates (a total of 30 will be recruited across the Hub) on frontier research for robotics in extreme environments.

The multidisciplinary research team currently being assembled between Heriot Watt (Lead) and its partner universities (Edinburgh, Imperial College, Liverpool, Oxford) will key scientific challenges including:

Mapping and surveying of complex structures using multiple robots equipped with distributed, mobile optical and acoustic spatial sensors and industry accepted non-destructive evaluation (NDE) sensors in the dynamic and challenging off-shore environment.

Planning and execution of efficient, localisable and repeatable navigation and interaction of heterogeneous robotic deployment platforms (wheeled and legged for topside, aerial, marine) for sensor placement and manipulation in extreme and dynamic conditions - with specific emphasis on failure prediction, re-planning and recovery strategies.

Human machine teaming through effective communication of world view, system actions and plan failures between remote robot and operator to develop trust and avoid unnecessary aborts.

Candidates will have will have a PhD in electrical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, physics, or a related area. Strong competences in Sensor Processing. Mobile robotics, Machine Learning and Control are required, with hands on experience with implementation of algorithms on real robots. You will be working as part of a large team of researchers and we expect excellent communication and teamwork ability from any candidates to these positions.

The positions are available for 12 months.

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Yvan Petillot at Y.R.Petillot@hw.c.uk or on 0131 451 8277

Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and ethnic minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts at Heriot-Watt.
