Postdoctoral Fellow

European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)

Contract Duration: 2 years

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations worldwide. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK) and Rome (Italy).

We are recruiting a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to characterize the phosphoinositide switches involved in T cell signalling and function. The project builds onto the development of new assays to measure protein-lipid interactions and complexes (Saliba et al., 2014, Nat Methods; Saliba et al., 2016, Nat Protoc; Maeda et al., 2014, Nat Protoc; Maeda et al., 2013, Nature) and implies a scientific collaboration with Prof. Christian Freund, Freie Universität Berlin. The successful candidate will join the Anne-Claude Gavin group at the Structural and Computational Biology Unit at EMBL Heidelberg, but will closely collaborated with our partner. EMBL is a leading international research organization with a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary atmosphere (see www.embl.de). The Gavin group applies systems biology and biochemical approaches to study biological membranes, lipid metabolism and transport. Our goals are to decipher mechanisms by which lipid signatures and gradients are sensed and “read” by signalling, effector proteins and to characterize the machinery involved in the creation and maintenance of lipid gradients in eukaryotic cells.

Qualifications and Experience
We are seeking to recruit an outstanding candidate with strong interest in the characterization of lipid-based switches in the regulation of T cell function using newly developed biochemical and microfluidic assays. The successful candidate holds a Ph.D. in biophysics, biochemistry or membrane biology. Previous experience in the purification and biochemical analysis of large macromolecular complexes and/or previous experience in lipid and membrane biochemistry would be an advantage. The position requires an outstanding motivation and commitment to conduct basic research in the area of lipid biology, the ability to work independently as well as in a multidisciplinary team and excellent technical, organizational and management skills. An initial contract of two years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on the circumstances.
