Research Fellow in Hybrid Manufacturing

Full time starting salary is normally in the range £29,799 to £38,832. Please note this post is aligned to external funding and therefore the salary on offer is up to a maximum of £31,604 only.

A Research Fellow position is available to work on tasks associated with H2020 funded project, “Modular laser based additive manufacturing platform for large scale industrial applications” (MAESTRO), led by Professor Stefan Dimov from the School of Engineering at the University of Birmingham. The work will be focused on:

  • designing, implementing and validating hybrid process chains that integrate metal additive processes, i.e. Laser-based Powder Ben Fusion, with complementary inspection, machining and surface treatment technologies;
  • developing and validating in-line modular workholding systems;
  • digitising the work flow in integrating metal additive manufacturing (AM) processes with other CNC controlled processes through the use of CAD/CAM tools;
  • conducting research on integrating processes in production lines;
  • carrying out a quantitative analysis of parameters affecting process-material interactions, e.g. materials’ microstructure, removal rates, etc., in machining and metal AM processes;
  • developing new applications for production lines that integrate metal AM processes;
  • developing communication tools and organising workshops to promote the hybrid manufacturing expertise offered by the School;
  • presenting the results and capabilities of the Manufacturing Research Group in the School at meetings and conferences.

The successful candidate will have a first degree in the area of Mechanical, Materials or Manufacturing Engineering and hold a PhD or EngD in Mechanical, Materials or Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent qualifications. •            High level of competence and practitioner experience in CAD/CAM and manufacturing processes, e.g. machining amd/or metal AM technologies, modelling of process-material interactions, designing manufacturing solutions that integrate complementary technologies, the use of different surface characterization/ measurement technologies for process optimization. Good writing and presentations skills, and an ability to work independently and/or as part of a large team is required.
